A New Toy: Corel Painter Essentials 4

Wednesday November 19, 2008Oops, I mean, new tool! It's for WORK, right? (Just nod and smile like you believe me....) I've been coveting a decent software package ever since I switched to the Mac and lost the PC Arcsoft Studio program. (It runs on OS 9, but the interface is ugly). I had a lot of fun with the trial version of Corel Painter Essentials 4 , and missed its features when it expired. It has the most amazingly intuitive interface, which I find very pleasant to use, and seems to have all the features I need for drawing and image editing. I'll be using it to create some tutorials over the next few weeks, so I'll let you know how that goes, and whether there are any major limitations you need to know about. If you'd like a more detailed assessment, check out the review of Corel Painter Essentials 4 (Mac and Windows) by our Graphics Software guru Sue Chastain. I found buying online from Corel surprisingly fast and easy. I already had an account at the Corel website, and had registered Essentials 3, so I was eligible for the upgrade, making it a little cheaper. I started the trial version of Essentials 4, which sent me to the Corel website to purchase the key. The checkout auto-added a two year 'software guarantee', which sounded like a good idea, so I kept that option. Then it was just a matter of printing the receipt and typing in the activation key. Easy peasy! So I guess I'd better go and have some fun, er, I mean, do some work...Comments (0)Permalink

Art and Lifelong Learning

Wednesday November 19, 2008Many Drawing/Sketching readers are just coming back to art after years spent focusing on career and family. It's wonderful to hear from people who have rediscovered their creative side and are learning to express themselves through drawing and painting. Many people enjoy learning independently from books and the Internet, but formal education is also available to mature students. It isn't always easy learning a new skill as an . As an independent learner, you're faced with the problem of 'where do I start?' and a huge range of choices. Well at least I can help you start learning to draw! We tend to be hard on ourselves, expecting great things, and getting easily frustrated if we don't progress. That can lead to taking shortcuts - beware of trying to run before you can walk! Make sure you take your time and cover the basics. As an , you are used to being good at things, even expert, and being a beginner can feel very uncomfortable. Being an also has huge advantages. We already have good hand-eye control, a solid vocabulary and some exposure to art, so we have a good foundation for studies in art. You've already learned many skills, so you know that while you are struggling with something now, you know that you will eventually master it. Art school can provide a whole new set of challenges for the older student. Read more...Comments (1)Permalink

Graphite Pencil FAQ - Choosing and Using Pencils

Sunday November 16, 2008Need to know what the 'H' and 'B' and those numbers mean? Which one to pick for line drawing, which one for shading? And can you use an eraser, or not? This graphite pencil FAQ has the answers for those frequently asked pencil drawing questions. Remember that there are no strict rules. That old adage of 'a real artist doesn't use an eraser' is nonsense. That's like saying 'a real musician never plays a wrong note'. Or possibly, that 'a writer never edits their work'. Being creative can mean taking a risk, and making a mistake. It can mean making a decision, then changing your mind. I make a mistake, I'm going to fix it! But erasers are also useful tools in many other ways. You may well find that you prefer to do things differently, or choose different pencils to those that I select. That's fine - it's important to find tools and techniques that fit your personal style. My suggestions offer a place to start, and ideas to try out.
